Virginia “Virg” Dziewit passed away peacefully on April 21, 2020 at the age of 97 in Plymouth, Michigan. She was preceded in death by her loving husband John, parents Andrew and Helen Wrobel, and beloved siblings Stella Wrobel, Sally Ludwig-Wrobel, Stanley (Jean) Wrobel, Ann (Ed) Ochen, Helen (Richard) Brooks, and Dolores Wrobel. Virg is survived by many loving nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, godchildren, cousins, and countless friends.

A lifelong parishioner of St. Hedwig Catholic Church in Detroit and longtime second grade teacher at St. Mary Magdalen in Melvindale, Virg will be remembered for her dedication to the Polish and Catholic communities, as well as her extensive volunteer work. She served in many roles over the years, including President of the Parish Council, Franciscan Sisters Auxiliary, and St. Hedwig Seniors. Additionally, she served as Treasurer of the St. Hedwig Heritage Society and as a Regent in the Daughters of Isabella (Kateri Tekawitha Circle). Virg was also a member of the Rosary Society and the Polish Roman Catholic Union (PRCU) for most of her life.

A resident of Dearborn Heights for over 50 years, Virg’s home was a gathering place where family and friends were always welcome. Backyard parties, dinners in the garage, and holiday celebrations will be fondly remembered by many. Virg was perhaps best known for Polish cuisine. The daughter of a caterer, she was extremely generous with her cooking and would feed anyone who came to visit – right down to the postal carrier. In her later years, Virg often reminisced about her family and longtime friends, neighbors, including her entire extended “Italian Family”.

Virg transitioned to living at the Ashford Court Retirement Community, Westland in 2013. For the next seven years she continued to remain active, serving on the resident board, participating in countless activities, and making many friends. She was known for welcoming new residents into the community and her outgoing personality ensured no one felt alone.

The family would like to recognize some of the special people in Virg’s life who provided her assistance and care when she needed it the most, including Denise Bozek Rozenbaum (godchild), Bobbie Paja (cousin), Nicole and Jim Gray (special friends), Joy Goetz RN of Amedisys Compassionate Care Hospice and Medilodge of Plymouth.

At the time of her passing, we are confident that our “Auntie Virg” was welcomed into the community of Heaven with open arms by waiting family. Our life on Earth will never be the same without her.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Parish of St. Francis D’Asissi/St. Hedwig (3245 Junction Avenue, Detroit, MI 48210), or to the retirement fund supporting The Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph, (5229 South Park Avenue, Hamburg, NY 14075).
