Jerry Franklin Smith, age 88, of Novi, Michigan, passed away peacefully on October 21st, 2023 after a long battle with kidney disease. He was born to parents Ovid and Consuelo Smith on January 14th, 1935 in Toledo, Ohio. After graduating from David Mackenzie High School in 1953, Jerry went on to become a firefighter for the Detroit Fire Department in 1956. He would serve the city of Detroit for a proud 40 years, with his career ending as the esteemed Senior Chief of the department.

Jerry is survived by his loving wife, Margo, who he was married to for forty-nine years. Prior to his marriage to Margo, Jerry was married to Beverly, with whom he had two children, Timothy (Deborah) and Cynthia (James). Jerry was also stepfather to Doug and Linda, grandfather to Erin (Jeremy), Samantha, Jeffrey, Jaenelle, Matthew, Dayna, and Kevin, and great-grandfather to Jack and James.

Known for his love for all things Ford, Jerry was the proud owner of a ‘65 Mustang, which he happily drove off the lot and took tender care of for more than forty years. His passion for fine vehicles was so great, it even earned him a feature in the magazine Mustang Monthly. This passion would extend towards his family and inspire them all in their own unique ways. Having passed the Mustang on to his son Timothy, its legacy continues with a new generation of avid car buffs.

Jerry was always happily available to lend a helping hand to friends and family alike. Whether it was regularly volunteering at a soup kitchen or being the first to arrive in times of need, he could always be counted on. When he wasn’t being a hero to all, he greatly enjoyed being on the water, and could be found swimming, boating, or enjoying a nice day with his fishing rod out on the lake. He adored his crossword puzzles, spoiling family dogs, and guests frequently found themselves praising his excellent cooking. Whatever he felt passionate about, Jerry always gave his all.

In lieu of flowers please consider giving to the Detroit Firemen's Fund Association or the Michigan Humane Society (see links in the contributions).
