Life Story / Obituary
Dorothy Jean Bassett, 88, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2025. She was born December 29, 1936, to Frank and Mary Stambersky. They and her younger sister, Judy (Maurer), preceded her in passing.
Dorothy was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. She married Del Bassett from Hastings, Michigan, and the couple began their life together in California. They moved back to Michigan in the early 1960’s. Dorothy worked throughout her life, beginning her career in retail as a teenager in Detroit. She also worked at WKZO, Murray Packing, and concluded her career working in management at Fred Meijer’s store in Canton, Michigan.
Dorothy was widowed in 1987 when Del passed. She enjoyed spending time with her family and was beloved by her daughters Karey (Mike) and Denise (Dave), and was loving “Grandma Dots” and “Manna” to her granddaughters Katerina, Karissa (Henry), Katelyn, and Morgan. She will be greatly missed by her loved ones.
Dorothy was known for her artistic creativity, which she expressed in her many paintings, ceramic works, and retail store displays.
She will also be remembered for her love of plants and animals.
She had a green thumb and shared her knowledge of plants through her plant education and sales business. She also shared her talents by volunteering at Saint Mary’s Church in Wayne, where she cared for the indoor plants.
Dorothy loved animals and delighted in caring for and spending time with her many pets (dogs, cats, parakeets, rabbit, tropical fish) throughout the years.
Dorothy will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by her family and friends. Memorial contributions may be directed to Matthaei Botanical Gardens (she enjoyed their classes), or the Michigan Humane Society (she loved her pets). https://give.michiganhumane.org/ or https://giving.umich.edu/um/make-a-gift
