Adelaide M. Summers

10-04-1926 to 03-12-2024

Adelaide M. Summers was born in Flint, MI to Charles Chevalier and Nathalie Derosia. She was the wife of Edwin D. Summers, who predeceased her after 51 years of marriage. They had seven children: Cheryl, Mark, Charlotte, Kathleen, Patricia, Jane, and Bernard. Adelaide was also blessed with 12 grandchildren: Michael, Edwin, Matthew, Eric, Erin, Gabrielle, Jennifer, Alan, Brandon, Amanda, Brooke (predeceased), and Courtney. Additionally, she had 10 great-grandchildren: Quinn, Lucy, Colin, Adelaide, Conor, Carter, Seth, Arielle, Anastasia, and Kelley.

Adelaide was the oldest of nine children: Betty, Mary, Elaine, Cecilia (Sue), and the predeceased Ray, Arlene, Ardith, and Norma. She had a career making draperies and curtains, working at Stouffers Restaurant as a cook, and was a Home Economics Educator for the Detroit school system.

In her free time, Adelaide enjoyed traveling with her husband to Hawaii, Australia, and New Zealand. She also took family trips to many National Parks, mostly for educational purposes but also for family vacations. After Edwin passed away, she continued to travel with her daughters: Cheryl, Jane, and Kathy.

Adelaide was a strong advocate for education. She started college part-time when her oldest child, Cheryl, was starting college. She went back to school full-time when the rest of her children were in middle school and earned a Master’s Degree in Food Service and Home Economics. After retirement, she volunteered with the "Promise for the Future" program and took senior classes at a local college in Arizona, which led to more traveling opportunities.

One of the most impactful aspects of Adelaide’s life was her sewing skills, which she considered a God-given gift. She made her house a home for her family with her draperies, curtains, clothing, and upholstering. She continued to sew into her retirement years, making quilts, aprons, and blankets for her loved ones.

Adelaide M. Summers will be remembered for her dedication to her family, her love of learning, and her incredible sewing talents.
