LAU, YOCK POY, beloved husband, father and grandfather peacefully passed away on February 1, 2023. Yock was born on October 10, 1938, in Taishan, China. As a young man, Yock was a diligent student who succeeded in his studies and became a schoolteacher in Hong Kong. His passion for learning and love of teaching was a perfect combination as many of his students went on to be successful in their respective professions, many of whom he stayed in touch with long after they graduated.

He met his wife, Sau Kuen (Lim) while in Hong Kong where their first two children were born, Gigi and Bayne. Like many of his generation, Yock and Sau moved to the United States for a chance at a better life in which to raise their children and provide them with unlimited opportunities. Despite having an advanced education and taught middle – high school, teaching jobs in the US were unavailable. Determined to provide for their young family, Yock and his wife became restaurant owners. The Hong Kong restaurant was a known establishment in the community until it burned down in a fire during the winter of 1999. Their younger son Kirby was born later and the restaurant business became a full family affair where the children worked after school and on weekends where they instilled a strong work ethic and needed to be part of the local community in their children.

One of Yock’s favorite hobbies was to travel back home to Hong Kong and Taishan with his wife where they spent cherished time with friends and extended family. His countless friends in China and the United States could always depend on Yock to help them with anything and everything. In addition to providing them with money, he helped with securing loans for housing and cars, in addition immigrating to the United States, sponsoring several friends and relatives to relocate around the country in pursuit of their American Dream. Generous to a fault, his heart and kindness knew no bounds and between him and his wife, they became surrogate “uncles and aunties' to numerous friends and family for life.

Above all, Yock cherished being a father, grandfather, and father-in-law. He was a man who always looked for a connection or to hear their story with anyone he met. His smile and big laugh will be deeply missed and the lessons and values he imparted on his students, family and friends will live on in his honor.

Yock was blessed with and is survived by his wife, Sau of 63 years, daughter Gigi Liu and husband John Liu; sons Bayne Lau and wife Nancy Guo; and Kirby Lau and wife Stella Wong-Lau; and five beautiful grandchildren, Kai Lau, Liana Lau, Dillan Lau, Avery Liu, and Zoe Liu.

The Lau family invites friends and family to visit and pay their respects while celebrating Yock’s life on Saturday, February 4, 2023 between 10:00am – 12:30pm at Neely-Turowski Funeral Home 30200 Five Mile Rd., Livonia, MI 48154 (west of Middlebelt). The burial will take place immediately following the service at Mt. Hope Memorial Gardens, 17840 Middlebelt Rd, Livonia, MI 48152.
