Thomas B. Doherty of Superior Township, Michigan, age 82, passed away on April 23, 2020. He was born in Foxford, Ireland on October 30,1937 to Bridget (McNulty) and William Doherty.
He came to America at age 19 and later joined the U.S. Air Force, where met his wife, Janine. They raised five children as Tom pursued his education throughout his military career ultimately earning his master’s degree. He served over 20 years in the military, retiring from the U.S. Army as Major.
Following his military retirement, Tom and Jan settled in Flint. He began a second career as Associate Director of Purchasing for the University of Michigan hospital. After retiring from the university, Tom and Jan began traveling the world in earnest. Outside of spending time with family and friends, travel was their joy.
The center of Tom’s world was his wife and family. He took every opportunity to brag about his kids and grandkids. Tom was a generous and loving man and will be greatly missed.
Preceded in death by his beloved wife of 59 years, Janine Doherty, he is survived by their children Bill (Laura) Doherty, Tom (Kim) Doherty, Mari (Darin) Ellis, Cara (Barry) Boggs, and Dan (Paula) Doherty, his sister Sr. Teresa Doherty, 9 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and friends.
Tom will be interred in a ceremony at the Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan at a future date. The family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in lieu of flowers and sends a special thank you to the nurses and staff at Vibrant Life Senior Living and the medical team/staff in the COVID-19 unit at The University of Michigan Hospital.
