Life Story / Obituary

She loved to drive fast cars and even slow cars. She simply loved to drive.

After fighting the ultimate good fight, Mary Edwina (Baker) Spohr of Garden City, MI traveled onward to her next destination on December 25, 2022. She was fond of making interesting entrances and exits, this last one on a crisp, cold Christmas morning.

Born May 2, 1936, in Detroit, MI, the city that shaped her character and helped form her open attitude and curious nature. She was a Detroit and Michigan history buff and enjoyed telling the stories of her many adventures, either near or far. She possessed a hearty laugh, a mercurial disposition - but mostly sunny! - and a wicked sense of humor.

She graduated from Ladywood High School in Livonia, worked at the local Venoy Drugs in her longtime town of Garden City, she was an easy touch for any child coming in to see her for some penny candy. Mary (The Bean) also worked at nearby Westland Meijer and Canton Meijer pharmacies, where she became something of a mother/aunt/grandmother figure to her beloved co-workers and probably many a customer, too. She adored her job; and would have continued to work there another 50 years if God had not got impatient to call her home.

Mary was preceded in death by her son Mark, and her siblings Philip, Robert and Patricia. She leaves many grievers: Son Paul (Amy), Daughter Julie, (Lois) and siblings Norman, Carol, Linda, Joyce, and Joan and extended family. Her dear friends, Marion, Celeste, a fat rescue cat named Abby and too many admirers to ever list here - she loved you all as part of her family.

A good journey to you, Mary. Your presence made our lives more fascinating, funny and fabulous.

Just like you.
