Life Story / Obituary

On February 28, 2022 we lost our beloved Mom, Grandma, Sister, Aunt, and Friend Joan Badalament. She was born on February 6, 1935 and had recently celebrated her 87th birthday. She was the foundation of our family and over many years provided love, support, and caregiving to so many. She was always there for us in our time of greatest need, with a quiet place to stay, a hug, and of course our favorite meal.

Mom grew up in Dearborn and loved to share stories of her childhood with her brothers, sister, and countless aunts, uncles, cousins, and neighbors. She was very proud of her Slovenian heritage, her high school alma mater Fordson (’53), and her career as an executive assistant on ‘Mahogany Row’ at Ford Motor Company.

She loved crafting, including sewing, cross-stitch, needlepoint, knitting, macrame, and whatever craft du jour was in vogue at the time. Her home on Middleboro in Livonia, and more recently her condo in Commerce were lovingly decorated with her meticulous handywork.

Joan joined the Catholic Church upon her marriage to her husband Anthony and embraced her faith. She loved being an active part of her neighborhood church, St. Maurice, and could often be found there socializing with the Women’s Guild and helping with various activities.

Her greatest source of pride was her family. She humbly celebrated our successes, and she provided heartfelt guidance, encouragement, and support. She was a loving, devoted Grandma who cherished her four grandchildren and was their biggest champion.

Joan is survived by her son Michael (Jennifer), her daughter Lisa (Patrick) Hurley, her grandchildren Kevin and Mary Beth Hurley and Peter and Mark Badalament. She will also be missed by her twin brother Joe (Dolores) Devyak, Margaret (the late John) Kirar, Robert Devyak and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Anthony and her Father and Mother, Amelia and Joseph Devyak.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Joan's name to the Capuchin Soup Kitchen in Detroit.
