Life Story / Obituary

Carole Lynn Zarotney, 78, returned to our heavenly Father on September 5, 2021, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Livonia, MI. She was surrounded by her devoted husband and three sons.

Carole was born to the late Charles DeMatte and Carolyn DeMatte, a machinist and a homemaker respectively, in Wheeling WV, on February 11, 1943. Carole grew up in the Ohio Valley, living there until she married her high school sweetheart John, on September 4, 1965. The newlyweds headed off to Pittsburg, PA, where John continued his graduate studies and after a brief stint in Northeast Ohio, moved to Woodhaven, MI, where they raised their three sons.

Besides being a wonderful homemaker, Carole also worked as a para-professional in the Woodhaven School District for nearly 20-years, serving mainly those with special needs. Carole and John were charter members of Our Lady of the Woods Catholic Church in Woodhaven where she was active with the women’s group and choir. Later, after moving to Canton, MI, they joined Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church where they were active members for many years.

Carole loved the Lord, family, travel, and spending time with her many friends. She was a voracious reader, accumulating a library’s worth of books, and a world-class talker. Every time Carole went to church, the beach, a restaurant, or even the grocery store, she’d come away with gobs of information about someone she met.

Carole is survived by her husband of 56 years, John; her sons Greg (Monique), Todd (Claudia), and Jeremy (Carrie); her grandchildren Adam, Evan, Elijah, Benjamin, Samuel, Joseph, Easton, Caroline, Liam, Isaac, and Asher; her mother, Carolyn; sister Joan and brother David.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 9, 2021 from 2-8 pm, with a Rosary at 6:30 pm at the Neely-Turowski Funeral Home, 45100 Warren Rd., Canton, MI 48187.

A funeral Mass in celebration of Carole’s life will take place at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church, 47650 N Territorial Rd, Plymouth, MI, on Friday, September 10, 2021, at 9:30 am (Instate at 9 am) with a luncheon to immediately follow at the church hall. Carole will be buried at the Our Lady of Hope Catholic Cemetery, 18303 Allen Rd., Brownstown, MI, Friday at 2:00 pm.
